Boutique hotels in Namibia: Windhoek rooms and the Skeleton Coast side
Namibia is usually sold as a driving country, gravel roads, dunes, long empty horizons. The small hotels are the part nobody talks about: owner-run guesthouses in Windhoek with courtyards and good coffee, and old German-era houses on the coast that have been stripped back and rebuilt with restraint.
Windhoek
Klein Windhoek and the hillside suburbs hold the best small properties, ten to twenty rooms, gardens, local art and a kitchen that does game and fresh bread properly. It is the natural first and last night of any Namibian trip.
Swakopmund and the coast
Swakopmund's older buildings suit the boutique format: high ceilings, shuttered windows, cold Atlantic air outside. Lüderitz is smaller and stranger, and worth a night if you are heading that far south.
Planning the drive
Distances are long and daylight matters, so plan two nights in most places rather than one. May to October is dry and clear; small houses have very few rooms, so book the property before you fix the route.
